Growing Up Weird visiting artist promotional poster

Role: Designer, The Adsmith

Programs: Illustrator

Fred Newman—actor, comedian, sound effect extraordinaire—was invited to speak at the University of Georgia’s visiting artist series through the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. I filled the poster and promotional materials with hand lettering in order to speak to the lighthearted nature of his work and to convey Newman’s distinctly human-generated auditory experience: the personality and variations in the lettering were a hat tip to his range and flexibility as a performer.

According to Newman, the poster was “—a total knockout! Over the years of various performances, I’ve had hundreds of posters scotched-taped to doors, but never one that so captured what, I think, I’m about. I love it—the concept, type, the hand-drawn design and look. (I’d love to meet the designer and see their work while I’m there.)”

The poster was awarded an AIGA SEED Award for student work in the print category.
